Deciding What it is That You Want to Accomplish

So many people wander through life aimlessly and never seem to accomplish their most important goals. They may have big dreams about what they would like to accomplish in their health, their finances, their family relationships, and in their religious and ethical lives, but these dreams always seem elusive or just out of reach. What is the biggest reason that so many people fail to accomplish what is most important to them?

There are many factors that contribute to success and failure, and accomplishing one’s important purposes is really a lifelong task. However, many motivational speakers and achievement experts have studied success carefully and found that one of the most important ideas in achieving your dreams is clarity.

Napoleon Hill once wrote, “There is one quality that one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, knowledge of what one wants and a burning desire to achieve it.” We see in this statement that a burning desire is important because it causes us to work diligently until we achieve our goals, because someone who fervently wants to accomplish a goal will continue looking for a way to achieve this no matter what.

However, before you begin working daily towards reaching the goal, clarity must be achieved. Otherwise, you can end up staying busy all the time and feel like you’re accomplishing a lot even though you’re simply spinning your wheels.

Brian Tracy puts it this way in his book Eat That Frog: “Clarity is the most important concept in personal productivity. The number one reason why some people get more work done faster is because they are absolutely clear about their goals and objectives and they don’t deviate from them.”

If you’re currently struggling financially or in other areas of your life, take a moment to consider what you would like to accomplish in the next several months and several years. Even if you don’t feel like you’re struggling and have already accomplished many of your goals, it is always wise to evaluate your progress and look towards the future.

If you could accomplish anything during the next six months to one year, what would it be? Choose a goal that is challenging but achievable, and make sure it is one that would have a significant benefit in your life.

For example, don’t simply write down that you want to earn $1 million next year. If your current income is nowhere near this amount, it is unrealistic to expect that you can achieve this goal during the next 12 months (or perhaps even during the next few years).

No one is saying that you will never become a millionaire, but you must begin with something that is more easily attainable. Perhaps you can set a goal to save a certain amount of money during the next year. If you’re overweight, you can choose to lose a certain amount of weight. Better yet, make a list of a number of different goals you would like to achieve and then determine which one is most important to you. Break this all up into smaller chunks and begin working on this every day.
