Good Recruiter, Bad Recruiter
I recently read an article from Yahoo! HotJobs, titled, “Recruiters Reveal Pet Peeves About Job Seekers.” The question is, “What is your biggest pet peeve about job seekers today?” I wonder if there is site for job seekers biggest pet peeves about recruiters? I’ve had some pretty bad experiences with recruiters and some good ones too. Below, I’ve listed my top ten pet peeves about recruiters. Usually, this pertains to smaller companies rather than large companies.
My Top Ten Pet Peeves about Recruiters:
1. They withhold benefit information.
2. They withhold salary information or how it is paid out. For example, W-2, versus salaried, versus 1099.
3. They set up interviews you are not qualified to fill, leaving you and the hiring manger surprised and wasting both your time.
4. They call you all the time and keep in touch, but never produce a position.
5. They call you once, then never follow-up.
6. They need your resume to “fill” a position that a company is bidding on – in 6 months!
7. They loose your resume and need it again, and again, and again.
8. They “low ball” clients coming straight out of the military.
9. If you don’t accept the first position, they don’t call anymore.
10. You get “SPAM” from recruiters you don’t know about a position you never heard of and aren’t qualified for, but “if you know someone who can,” forward them this email.
Please remember – this does not include all recruiters, I’ve had some that were great. For instance, I had a recruiter who did everything except perform a mock interview with me. He sent interview tips, a job description, the names and titles of the folks I’d be meeting and called often to check on my status.
I’ve also had a recruiter help me get a position I previously turned down. It took some work on his part, but worked out for both of us in the end. Another recruiter even took the time to critique my resume and sent it back to me for revision, which was very helpful and I was very grateful.
I’ll end with 10 tips you can implement the next time you encounter a recruiter…Good Luck!
10 Tips to Remember when You Work with Recruiters.
1. Don’t be “bullied” into anything, such as salary, benefits, or the position itself…do it on your terms.
2. If they don’t contact you at least weekly and make you feel part of their team…move on to a better recruiter, there are plenty to choose from.
3. Research the company they work for and find out how they do business. Get their references!
4. Find out if you need to work for them first, many companies recruiters work for are temp-to-hire. You may owe them your time and energy for up to 6 months before you join the company that subcontracted to them.
5. Find out about benefits upfront. If they are illusive and aren’t willing to send you the benefits information, be weary.
6. Find out if the position is available immediately, or if it is for an “upcoming contract.”
7. Verify that they are the key point of contact in their organization, before you talk with their customer. It is very time consuming to interview with the hiring agency 2-3 times, before you even speak to an actual hiring manager. Try to avoid it.
8. Be sure they treat you like a person and not a number.
9. Find out if you’ll be an employee or a contractor, be sure to find out the contract length prior to moving forward with an interview.
10. Use your instinct. If they act unprofessional, thank them and move on.
