Six Degrees Away From a Job Referral

Do you know you are possibly, “six degrees” away from your next interview? “Six degrees of separation,” also known simply as networking, was tested on a news program. A man from overseas got in contact with a total stranger in the U.S. He accomplished this by contacting six people, who set up a meeting with this person he never met. He contacted the first person, who then new someone, who then new another….you get the point.

Lucky for you, your task is a little easier since you have more data to provide your new contacts. For example:

1. You know the company you are looking to join and the job title you can reference.
2. You know the city it is located in.
3. You probably know at least 250 people you can contact as your “first degree.”
4. You can contact folks via email, in-person or over the phone.
5. You can join local organizations to network business owners.
6. You can use social networking sites like LinkedIn.

The tools are available for you to start networking – today. But you need to take action, gain momentum and set goals. Make phone calls, send emails to everyone in your address book, make friends at the checkout line, have a relative introduce you to someone new…get out and get noticed!

Create goals, or short term action items, to keep you on track and focused. For example:

Day 1: Update my resume and spell check it twice. Network 10 family members. Meet 1 new person at the store/park/dentist.

Day 2: Apply to 10 job postings. Send 10 people my resume, network 8 new contacts. Update 2 versions of my resume. Meet 2 new people at the store/park/doctors office.

Of course these are quick goals, you can be more specific. Work on building your network and use the six degree principle to your advantage. By doing this you are actively looking for a new career instead of simply searching online and applying for jobs while watching TV. Applying online is great, but nothing works better than face-to-face contact and good old fashion networking. You’ll notice in a couple days you begin creating, or building, momentum. Within the first week, you may even begin to get emails and phone calls from your network. You’ll notice that calling, emailing and meeting new people, generated from your six degrees, becomes easier and even exciting. This positive attitude comes from the momentum only you can create. Keep this positive energy moving forward and use it to your advantage. Keep working your goals and find your six degrees to a new career!
