By Toby Barns

So you think routers, switches and TCP/IP protocols are cool? Great! Maybe you should consider becoming CompTIA Network+ certified.

What is Network+ certification? The CompTIA Network+ certification validates that a person has the essential skills necessary to be a vendor neutral networking professional. Vendor neutral actually means that the certification is not tied one specific brand of computer networks.

The certification consists of one challenging exam. It is often the next choice of IT certification after an individual acquires their A+ certification. This is a great way to become familiar with many of the standards that exist in networking, as well as how they apply to protocol stacks and when you should refer to them. Most networking professionals today will use their knowledge of these standards to help them resolve various networking issues which they troubleshoot on a day to day basis.

Thinking of becoming an I.T technician? The A+ Certification may be for you…

by Marie Coles

In need of a change of a change of career? Or beginning one as an I.T technician? If you’re interested in I.T and the way computers work, the A+ certification is definitely for you.

This qualification offers you the chance for you to demonstrate your skills as a computer technician. It is run by an organisation known as CompTIA – an organisation that trains I.T technicians to maintain PC’s that use a variety of systems, including Microsoft and Apple. The A+ is more naturally orientated towards the maintenance of Microsoft operating systems, due to Microsoft’s popularity as a home and work based system, however, newer examinations also include the increasingly popular Apple operating system.

To apply for this qualification, it is generally recommended that you have already have a good understanding of Microsoft Windows and other operating systems that are found on personal computers (PC). A substantial amount of experience is also recommended; however, it may be taken as a beginner’s course as long as you have a grounded understanding of systems and hardware.

Important Things to Know About CompTIA Network Plus Certification

1. Why should you even consider doing the Network plus certification?

The Network plus certification is a natural continuation from the A+ certification. A+ teaches you about computers (hardware and software), the net+ teaches you about networking. This is another entry certification a lot of people take to broaden their knowledge base before tackling the more advance certifications.

2. CCNA vs Network+ confusion

As both these certifications are about networking, new people in the industry feel confused on which will give them more value for money. The truth is, you can’t compare them. The only thing they have in common is that they deal with networking. The Network+ is an entry certification which broadens your foundation. It is vendor neutral. The CCNA is not. It concentrates on Cisco Routers.

Network+ although an entry cert has a lot of information – and I mean ALOT. By the time you finish studying for it, you will be sick of network terminology. The CCNA is even more difficult. After studying for this one, you will be subnetting in your head – even when you don’t realize it. Know how you hear a song and it sticks in your mind and you can’t get it out? Same thing with subnetting.

If you are new to the industry, go for the network+ first.
