Retraining for a career in IT

by Jason Kendall

In the UK today, industry could not function efficiently without assistance from support workers solving problems with PC’s and networks, while making recommendations to users each and every day. Our desire for those people is ever increasing, as commercial enterprise becomes significantly more computer dependent.

The somewhat scary thought of finding your first role in IT is often eased by some training providers because they offer a Job Placement Assistance programme. With the growing skills shortage in the UK right now, it’s not too important to become overly impressed with this service however. It’s not as difficult as you may be led to believe to get the right work once you’re properly qualified.

One important thing though, don’t procrastinate and wait until you’ve completed your exams before bringing your CV up to date. As soon as you start a course, enter details of your study programme and get it out there! Having the possibility of an interview is better than being rejected. Many junior support jobs are given to students (who’ve only just left first base.) Generally, you’ll receive quicker results from a specialist independent regional employment service than you’ll experience from any course provider’s employment division, because they’ll know the local area and commercial needs better.

To bottom line it, as long as you put the same commitment into landing a job as into studying, you won’t have any problems. Some men and women strangely conscientiously work through their course materials and then call a halt once they’ve passed their exams and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

A skilled and professional advisor (as opposed to a salesman) will cover in some detail your current level of ability and experience. This is useful for calculating your starting point for training. Remember, if you’ve got any work-experience or certification, then it’s not unreasonable to expect to pick-up at a different starting-point to a trainee with no history to speak of. Always consider starting with a user-skills course first. It will usually make the transition to higher-level learning a little less steep.

Be watchful that any certifications you’re studying for are commercially relevant and are the most recent versions. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are often meaningless. You’ll find that only recognised examinations from the major players like Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco and CompTIA will open the doors to employers.

Your training program should always include the very latest Microsoft (or Cisco, CompTIA etc.) authorised exam preparation packages. Ensure that your practice exams haven’t just got questions on the correct subjects, but are also posing them in the same way that the proper exam will phrase them. It really messes up students if they’re met with completely different formats and phraseologies. For many reasons, it’s essential to ensure that you’ve thoroughly prepared for the real exam prior to doing it. Rehearsing simulated exams logs the information in your brain and helps to avoid failed exams.

It’s abundantly clear: There really is no such thing as personal job security anywhere now; there can only be market and business security – as any company can remove anyone whenever it meets the company’s business requirements. Of course, a quickly growing market-place, where staff are in constant demand (through an enormous shortage of fully trained staff), enables the possibility of real job security.

Investigating the Information Technology (IT) industry, the recent e-Skills study demonstrated an over 26 percent shortfall of skilled workers. Showing that for each four job positions existing throughout the computer industry, we’ve only got three properly trained pro’s to perform that task. Properly skilled and commercially educated new staffs are consequently at an absolute premium, and it’s estimated to remain so for a long time. In reality, acquiring professional IT skills over the years to come is probably the greatest career move you’ll ever make.

How do I submit CompTIA credentials towards MCSA to Microsoft?

Microsoft accepts the combination of CompTIA A+ with either CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Server+ as an elective for the Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) certification program. In addition, Microsoft accepts CompTIA Security+ as an elective for both the MCSA and the Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) certifications, and as a specialization option for the MCSA: Security and MCSE: Security certifications.

1. Take at least one Microsoft MCSA on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 exam or Windows 2000 exam to obtain your MCP identification number (MCP ID). You must have your MCP ID number to apply your CompTIA credentials towards MCSA certification. Your MCP ID number is provided to you by e-mail after you take a Microsoft exam, regardless of whether you passed or failed the exam. You can also contact a Microsoft Regional Education Service Center for assistance.

2. In order to submit your CompTIA certifications to Microsoft you will need to do the following: Log into your CompTIA record at www.comptia.org/careerid. If you are a first time user, you will need to create a user name and password before you can access the database and you will need to have your score report available. If you do not have a copy of your score report, please contact the test delivery provider that you used to take your exam. They will either mail you a copy of your score report or e-mail the information to you. The test vendors’ telephone numbers are the following: VUE: 1-877-551-7587 and Prometric: 1-800-776-4276.

3. Once you have logged into your record you will need to click on “publish credentials” and send your A+ and Network+ or Server+ for MCSA or Security+ for MCSE to: MCPHelp@microsoft.com. You will need to provide your MCP ID# in the text field of the validation form. You MUST use this “publish credentials” feature to validate your certifications to Microsoft. DO NOT send them an e-mail directly. Only by using this validation process will they accept your certification information. If you have any questions please contact Microsoft at 1-800-636-7544.

Microsoft has a new type of Exam

The 83-640 Microsoft Exam is a new exam which features actual emulations of Windows Servers on the examination. Previously, on the 70-640 exam, there were only multiple choice questions and simulations. Emulations allow users to practice any normal Operating System task instead of a finite amount of steps that simulations allow. Now, students are given the chance to log in on a secure Microsoft server, and actually test in real-time on an Operating System. For example, a user is allowed to completely remove the OS from the server, but all the settings will be set back to default after an hour of emulation.

The 83-640 exam is used to test and certify for the MCTS: Windows Server 2008 course as well as MCITP: Enterprise Administrator and MCITP: Server Administrator for the Windows 2008 courses. However, not every country is completely switched over to the 83-640 form. Most places are still using the 70-640 exam. The new exam still covers the same topics that the courses outline, but the method of examination is changed. Also, there are still multiple choice questions; only part of the exam has been changed to test real-time skills required.

The Microsoft Small Business Specialist Certification

By Tom Lord

The Microsoft Small Business Specialist certification is designed to show that a company has proven experiencing in designing and implementing IT solutions for small businesses. It gives the company benefits that are only available to certified small business specialists including additional technical and sales support.

To gain the Small Business Specialist certification the company must first be a Microsoft partner. This can be either a registered partner or a Microsoft Certified Partner. Each has its own entry requirements that can be found on the Microsoft website. The company must also take a Microsoft Action Pack subscription and pass a Sales and marketing skills assessment. This is a small test that is taken online to verify that the applicant has the necessary knowledge to be able to sell appropriate IT solutions to small businesses.

The last requirement is that the company employs someone who has passed one of the required Microsoft technical exams. The most common exam to take is the Small Business server exam. Before switching to the 2008 exams this was the 70-282 Planning, Deploying, and Managing a Network Solution for the Small and Medium-Sized Business. With the 2008 exams you can now take the Windows Small Business Server 2008, Configuring certification.

When the requirements have been met you have access to several benefits including partner logos and specialist support. This gives you access to another level of support which includes 5 free incidents a year. There is also an active online community which you gain access to, this is helpful for resolving difficult technical issues and for getting help on selling solutions to small businesses.
